National Parks Litter

Week 7: August 5 - August 11

Seventh Week Highlights

  • Adventure Walk!

When I read about AviDog’s adventure walks, I knew I wanted to do them with this litter. The purpose of the walks is to use the puppies’ following instinct to create more reliable recalls and dogs who want to keep tabs on their people.

This was also our last opportunity before the nomograph results indicated their antibodies have worn off.

We split the litter by color and did a mini adventure walk at a remote park.

  • Columbus Fun

I took them for a fun weekend away from home. They experienced a car trip, a new place for an overnight stay, puppy-friendly dogs, and of course, the ball pit. Denali and Abisko discovered heaven in that ball pit.

  • Individual crate time

The puppies are much more active now so play space is premium in their pen. I’ve moved most of the crates out of the pen and into my office area. At least one meal a day is fed in a crate.

  • Water!

First introduction to water in the kiddie pool. The heat made the ice extra enticing.

For those interested in raising a water dog, AviDog has an ebook with some tips here.

  • Car Ride

The puppies took a trip to my parent’s house for a car ride, new place, and their puppy-friendly dog.

While the puppies are this small, I have 2-4 puppies per crate. I like them to have the support of their siblings for now.

  • Car Ride cont.

One thing I’ve noticed that helps with getting dogs settled for car rides is temperature control! Make sure their crates have good ventilation and they are cool. If ensuring this means starting the car a little earlier than loading up the dog, I’m inclined to encourage it. My current car has backseat AC and my cargo-area crates have fans on them to make sure the air circulates quickly. When I didn’t have backseat AC, I used Noggles to direct air flow: see here.

I use Ruff Land Kennels for car crates but there are many options for safe car travel with your dog. (While I love the Ruff land kennels, I would recommend a battery-powered fan like Ryobi’s vs their fans.)
